Timaru Medical Centre as it is now, is the result of the merging of 5 General Practices from three different sites in Timaru, into a new purpose built facility. The first merge occurred in July 2017 amalgamating Hassall Street Surgery and the three other practices within Timaru Medical Centre in Harper Street. The second merge occurred a year later with the Better Health team from Elizabeth Street joining the practice. The result is the largest General Practice in South Canterbury with over 10 thousand patients catered for.

TMC is well located with public transport nearby, as well as a supermarket & the Warehouse. Onsite Pharmacy, Physiotherapy and Podiatry services are also available.

TMC currently has 7 GPs, with another one joining the team in December 2019. Most days see 6 nurses working within varying capacities within the practice. The clinical team are well supported by 5 administration / reception team and two Managers.

The practice was developed as a teaching practice, with a dream to encourage new younger doctors to stay in South Canterbury, giving them an opportunity to work in a new and well supported environment. The practice is currently home to Resident Medical Officers on their three month rotation within primary care. We also act as a training practice for the RNZCGP GPEP training programme. TMC recently received its Cornerstone Accreditation, the highest quality standard available for General Practice. This confirms that TMC works in a way that exemplifies quality care for their enrolled population.
